The Inarin Chillmeadow lies along the cold north-east, tundra flats that carry the old empire's own name like a label on an empty drawer. In the brief bright season it is purple and gold to the horizon with hard small flowers; the rest of the year it is wind rehearsing. The name is the oldest thing in it: whatever the Inarin age did here has weathered below finding, and only the word stayed above ground.
